St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara
Our Founder
St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara, born in 1805 in Kainakary, Kerala, was a visionary social reformer, educationist, entrepreneur, and poet who ignited a renaissance in 19th-century Kerala. At a time when education was reserved for the elite, he pioneered the Pallikkoodam movement, establishing schools within church premises to make education accessible to all.
In 1831, he founded the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI), the first indigenous religious congregation for men, and later co-founded the Congregation of the Mother of Carmel (CMC) for women. A man of deep prayer, charity, and wisdom, St. Chavara dedicated his life to empowering communities through education and social upliftment. He lived for 65 years and passed away on January 3, 1871. His enduring legacy continues to inspire and shape the educational landscape of India today.
